Eine Frage, die man sich schon auch mal stellen muss: Wer hat eigentlich die größte Schallplattensammlung der Welt? Es gibt sogar eine Antwort. Paul Mawhinney heißt der Mann. Seine Sammlung umfasst mehr als eine Millionen Platten und eineinhalb Millionen Singles. Der Kurzfilm »The Archive« von Sean Dunne gibt mehr Aufschluss:
Paul Mawhinney was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. Over the years he has amassed what has become the world’s largest record collection. Due to health issues and a struggling record industry Paul is being forced to sell his collection.

In harten Zeiten zahlt sich die Investition in Schallplatten offenbar aus. Wer jetzt verkauft, macht ordentlich Rendite. Wie die emotionale Bindung zu den liebgewonnenen Vinylklassikern zu überwinden wäre, bleibt in dem Artikel »Von der Performanz der Plattensammlung« allerdings unbeantwortet. Geld und Emotionen sollten ohnehin getrennt voneinander betrachtet werden. Philipp Krohn berichtet.

Die Covermotive der »Album Covers Map« wie das auf dem »Melting Pot«-Album der Charlatans, die 96 Witton Street in Northwich, GB, sind in der Regel der Realität entnommene Originalschauplätze, in diesem Fall das Café, in dem sich die Band mit ihrem Label Beggars 1990 das erste Mal traf. Eine beachtliche Sammlung ist da zusammengekommen, meist mit kleinen Geschichten versehen, wie die über das »I, Robot«-Album vom Alan Parsons Project: »Traveling in Europe once I was suddenly surprised to realize I was in the middle of the I, Robot album cover at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. The people carrier tubes are unmistakable.« Über Joy Divisons’ »Closer« erfährt man: »The location of the tomb on the album cover, and one of the most beautiful and famous cemetaries in Italy«. Ort: Cimitero di Staglieno, near Piazza della Vittoria. Festzustellen wäre, dass das wahrhaft Menschliche die unnützen Dinge sind.

Das wohl bekannteste Plattencover hat Mark Ryden für die Red Hot Chilli Peppers entworfen. »One Hot Minute« aus dem Jahr ‘95 kennt, mag aber nicht unbedingt jeder. Dann gab’s da noch die »Dangerous« von Michael Jackson, die »Uncle Anesthesia« von den Screaming Trees, »Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop« u.v.m. Sein »Butcher Bunny« war nie im Pop. In diesem Fall handelt es sich um eins seiner Bilder, das u.a. auf dem Cover des BLAB!-Magazins zu sehen war. Rydens merkwürdige, surreale und beängstigende Malerei lohnt zu studieren. Mingering Mike: The Amazing Career of an Imaginary Soul Superstar.
Between 1968 and 1977 Mingering Mike recorded over fifty albums, managed thirty-five of his own record labels, and produced, directed and starred in nine of his own motion pictures. In 1972 alone he released fifteen LPs and over twenty singles, and his traveling revue played for sold out crowds the world over.
How is it that such a prolific musician has gone under the radar for the more than thirty years? The answer is that all took place in Mike’s imagination.
