Die Besessenheit von Zahlen und Listen – die besten Platten, die besten Filme – ist auch jenseits des Internets seit Langem schon ein fester Bestandteil unserer Kultur. Jetzt schauen die Menschen eben in einen neuen technischen Spiegel, der ihnen Auskunft darüber gibt, in welchem Maß sie lebendig sind. Der Existenzbeweis ist damit zu einem gewissen Grad an Google übergegangen, und das hat zweifellos eine deprimierende Seite: Alles im Internet ist so kalt, so vermessbar geworden. Was wir lesen, sind keine Mutmaßungen über uns selbst mehr, es sind die Statistiken selbst: Von da kamen wir, dorthin gingen wir, was wir hinterlassen haben, ist nichts weiter als eine elektronische Spur.
